A notary public is a public officer appointed and commissioned by the Governor whose function is to administer oaths, to take acknowledgements of deeds and other instruments, to attest to or certify photocopies of certain documents, and to perform other duties specified by law.
A notary's signature is required on many legal documents, and can be a wise precaution even when notarization is not mandated. A notary is there to witness the signatures on a legal document and verify the identity of the person who signs them.
